As GDPR Bares Its Teeth, Our Product Updates Up-Level Data Collection and Processing Transparency

News broke recently that Facebook is facing a 500,000 euro fine from the U.K.’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) for violating the Data Protection Act, the U.K.’s version of the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation. The violations stem from the Commission’s investigation into Cambridge Analytica’s role in influencing the Brexit referendum and the 2016 U.S. Presidential election.

This is yet another wake up call for the business and technology communities arising from the Facebook/Cambridge Analytica scandal. Put simply: collecting and processing personal data of consumers without their consent is too risky in this new, high-stakes regulatory environment.

Find Consent Data Even Faster with the Updated Identity Access Console

Earlier this year, we introduced the newly redesigned Identity Access console. Now, we’ve updated the console to display two new tabs:

  1. The status of a user’s consent to the digital property legal statement
  2. The consent histories of customers 

These tabs enable you to reduce response time to customers and regulators when they request consent data. You can also revoke customer consent on their behalf straight from these tabs when requested.

More Transparency at the Point of Data Collection

New functionality enables you to:

  • Localize a plain language explanation for the purpose of the data collection
  • Provide a URL link to the statement PDF

In addition to building more trust with customers by clearly explaining your consent request to them, this new functionality also helps you address GDPR requirements for transparency of data collection and processing.

Better Version Control Management

If a customer checks the “Remember Me” dialog box on a login screen, he or she enters a type of perpetual session. But what happens if the terms of service or privacy policy changes? If the customer is automatically logged in after a change has occurred, you could be out of compliance with the GDPR because you haven’t gained their explicit consent for the new terms.

Our new feature to periodically check the validity of a user account resolves this issue. Instead of a seamless log-in, a window will pop up requesting the customer’s renewal of consent before entering the site. It also automatically logs out any customer who hasn’t consented to the new policy.

New Captcha Options

Now, you can offer customers added security through new functionality to use FunCaptcha as a CAPTCHA provider for login and registration screens.

This not only improves conversion at the Captcha point, but also offers customers in mainland China or Russia added security since Google ReCaptcha is no longer supported in those regions.
